Tucked into the north end of the historic Detroit neighborhood, just a few blocks from Palmer Woods, the sauna pulls from the local vernacular in its exterior appearance. Like many of the surrounding homes, the entry porch mixes shingle-style cladding and Tudor revival lines, accented with the homeowners personal taste for north African design. The cedar shake façade is met with corner-wrapped thermally modified pine. The entry framing of exposed cedar rafters and posts sit above a simple “waterfalling” pine deck, leading to a Moroccan-imported door. Inside, the sauna is dark and rich. The Anteroom is clad in wide thermally modified spruce with simple line work. The sauna, entered through a custom-built live-edge door, is covered in a heavily thermally modified ash with simple, clear cedar benches. A shadow line traces the ceiling accented by Finnish Cariitti point lights rising from the backrests. Meant as a meeting place for friends and a social space, a Saunum heater works to recirculate and balance the warm air for all bathers at any bench level.
